Research in recent years has uncovered many fascinating works that add to the number of individual-style artists known from the three cities of Edo, Kyoto and Osaka. Under current reappraisal are also works by artists associated with the regions of Ibaraki, Tochigi, Nagoya, Tottori, etc., and along with prints produced in Kamigata (Kyoto and Osaka), here we present a general view of art that blossomed in all regions of the Japanese isles during the late Edo Period.

Born in Hota in Bôshû (modern-day Chiba), Hishikawa Moronobu (?-1694) is recognized as the founder of Ukiyo-e. We will exhibit works by Moronobu from the Chiba City Museum of Art collection: paintings, prints and printed books, as well as some works by other contemporary artists.
