Although many of his works are unsigned and unsealed, those that can be identified through comparison to be the work of Jihei are very often illustrations of famous scenes from Ko-jōruri, early ballad drama, and this picture is one of them. The “Story of Jōruri in Twelve Episodes”, the origins of the name Jōruri-bushi, Jōruri ballad, is a love story between Ushiwakamaru and Jōruri-hime, and in this “Fukiage” episode, Jōruri-hime revives the dying Ushiwakamaru who has been left on the beach at Fukiage. This illustration uses a compositional method showing successive events in a single picture, collecting several scenes from different times into one. On the right-hand side, Jōruri-hime, Ushiwakamaru and Reizei are portrayed sitting in a wayside shrine, and on its roof is a white dove, the messenger of Shōhachiman, and a bird transformed from ebōshi, court headwear. In the center, a great serpent (dragon) guards Ushiwakamaru, and scares away brigands. In the top left is what looks like Tengu in the sky. Ushiwakamaru’s hakama divided skirt bears two monkeys on waves, and his hitatare court robe bears a torii shrine gate and fence, with the Genpei banner, which is attire with classical designs in line with the “Twelve Episodes”.
