One of a series of six with waka poems of “Roku Tamagawa (Six Jewel Rivers)”, used when composing poetry in ancient times as an utamakura (place famed in poems), and featuring on a shikishigata (square poem card). This picture is on the theme of Tamagawa in Chōfu in Musashinokuni Province, and features the poem, “Chōfu no Tamagawa Teika tatsukuriya, sarasu kakine no asatsuyu ui Tsuranuki tomenu Tamagawa no sato Musashi no meisho (The Jewel River in Chōfu, Teika stood there in Tatsukuri, the morning dew drying on the fence without being threaded through by a string, the jewels of Tamagawa village, showcase of Musashi)”. A girl washing clothes in the Tamagawa river current is depicted using many rhymical curves. The lines of the cloth, girl and movement of the flowing water respond to each other beautifully, creating a light, agile picture composition. A change from the style of the other pictures in the series, it has a spectacular method of making the viewer focus on that movement by leaving out any background. The cloth does not use any black ink outline, and shows printing quality with the technique of “kime-dashi” to give it uneven relief. Although it is a shame that the red has faded, it is a well-printed print.
