つくりかけラボは、「五感でたのしむ」「素材にふれる」「コミュニケーションがはじまる」いずれかのテーマに沿った公開制作やワークショップを通して空間を作り上げていく、参加・体験型のアーティストプロジェクトです。いつでも誰でも、空間が変化し続けるクリエイティブな「つくりかけ」を楽しみ、アートに関わることができる表現の場です。
「折る」という行為における紙の造形表現の可能性を追求してきた作家の西村優子さんは、植物の繊維から人の手によってつくられ、その言葉や行為を受けとめて記憶し、役割を終えれば灰となりあるいは水に解かれ、自然へと還っていく「紙」のたどる時間を、人間の一生になぞらえて愛おしみます。
今回のプロジェクトでは、さわったり、折ったり、丸めたり、ちぎったりといった様々な働きかけを通して、私たちにとって最も身近な素材のひとつである「紙」の魅力を、あらためて探っていきます。
アーティストからのメッセージ
つくりかけたいのは、
紙と手のあいだに生まれる「なにか」なのかもしれない。
その「あいだ」に潜む気配を、
そっと探しにいく場をつくりたいと思いました。
「手間」を分解すると、「手（作業）」と「間（時間）」。
紙にふれることは、
私にとって素材と向き合う時間そのものなのです。
「紙と手のあいだ」は、訪れる人々が、多様な紙に触れ、
手を動かし、自由な時間を共有しながら、
心地よい“あいだ” とつくりかけの喜びを分かち合う場です。
紙が辿る旅路を、
私たち自身の「つくりかけ」の人生になぞらえながら、
つくりかけの瞬間そのものを大切にする視点が生まれたら、
こんなに嬉しいことはありません。（西村優子）

日本大学芸術学部デザイン学科建築デザインコース卒業後、筑波大学大学院修士課程芸術研究科構成分野修了。「折る」という行為における紙の造形表現の可能性を追求したく、紙の造形作家として活動を開始。同時に折形デザイン研究所にも所属。紙の造形作品は、国内外のホテルへの展開、ボストン美術館（アメリカ）収蔵、「PAPER –紙と私の新しいかたち- 展」 目黒区美術館（東京）、巡回展“Above the Fold”＋“WASHI TRANSFORMED”（アメリカ）に参加、”Hands on Origami” Museum For Papirkunst（デンマーク）など国内外で展開している。2022年より、「こどもとデザインの実験室 二角形」を主宰しながら、こどもたちと造形活動に取り組んでいる。高知県での土佐和紙文化や楮栽培、山間部のくらしに着目し、和紙の魅力を伝える活動も開始。2024 年より、一般社団法人カミスク代表理事。「紙」に魅了された人々と、紙まわりの「すく」をつなぎ、拡張しながら、皆と紙の未来に向けて取り組むことを目指し活動している。

In Between Paper and the Hand
Overview
“Art Lab” is a participatory, hands-on artist project creating spaces through open production and workshops on any of the themes of “Enjoying with the five senses”, “Feeling and sensing materials”, and “The start of communication”.
Artist Yuko Nishimura explores the possibilities of paper through folding, cherishing the material’s lifecycle from plant fibers to its eventual return to nature. Viewing this cycle as a metaphor for the human lifespan, she treats paper with deep affection. In this project, we rediscover the appeal of this familiar material through tactile actions such as folding, rolling, and tearing.
Message from the Artist
In the making, I seek the “something”
that emerges between paper and the hand,
creating a space to search for the subtle presence dwelling in-between.
The Japanese word “Tema” (effort)
breaks down into “Te” (hand) and “Ma” (time),
reflecting my belief that touching paper is time itself
—a quiet moment spent facing the material and its tactile essence.
“In Between Paper and the Hand” allows visitors
to touch various papers and share time at their own pace.
It is a space to experience a comfortable “in-between”
and the simple joy of things being in the making.
If, by tracing the journey of paper,
you may see your own life as always becoming
and cherish those moments, nothing would make me happier.
